You will be responsible to research a policy issue, health care concern, or advocacy issue that is meaningful to you, and personally contact an organization that is working on that issue or contact an elected representative to express their concern about that issue.
You have several options to explore advocacy:
Many organizations that focus on a particular health concern, such as the Alzheimers Association, the American Heart Association, and the American Diabetes Association, have links on their websites with easy ways to become an advocate for their organization.
Another option is to join a health professional organization such as Gerontological Society of America, American Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau, and pursue an advocacy role as a nurse.
A third choice is to independently research a health policy concern at the state or national level, such as the opposition to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), obesity prevention, or cuts to home health care and write to your state or national representative with your concerns.
A fourth choice is to write a letter to an elected official regarding a piece of legislation or an issue that you choose to advocate for. If you are assigned to write a letter in another class, you may use that letter as your advocacy action for this assignment, however you still need to complete the 2-page reflection on advocacy (see below).
