Walden University (2014) states that the dissertation committee is unique to doctoral programs and supports the student in completing a high quality and relevant dissertation research study. The committee includes a committee chair and committee member that the student selects. The chair makes sure that the dissertation meets all Walden, student and discipline requirements. The committee member supports the chair and may serve as a content expert or methodology expert or both. Overall, the committee member supports the chair in their area of expertise. URR also joins as a committee member, but is not chosen by the student. The URR is responsible for a reliable quality assurance process.

Walden University (2014) provides guidance that the chair must be from the student’s department. Herndon (n.d.) recommends considering specialty and “match” when identifying potential committee members to contact. I chose my chair based on the above factors. First, I had him for my quantitative analysis class and appreciated his feedback and especially his prompts to analyze the data in different ways. I enjoyed his instructional style, appreciated his challenges, and feel that I will benefit from his instruction and guidance during the dissertation process. Secondly, after his Ph.D. in psychology and statistics, he worked for one of the largest health insurance consultants in the world conducting data analysis. Since my dissertation is in the area of health insurance, this seemed like a good fit. He will be my content and methodology expert. I chose my committee member because I respect her area of research, have enjoyed her academic papers and appreciated her approach in class. She also obtained her Ph.D. in I-O psychology and I believe that she will be a good mentor for me in the field of I-O psychology in general.

The committee chair and member are nominated on university forms, after acceptance of the position by the specific faculty, and approved by the student’s program director. And while the dissertation supervisory committee provides an extremely valuable service, it is the ultimate responsibility of the student to ensure that the work gets completed in the appropriate manner.
