Community Awareness Campaigns in Reducing Cases of Type II Diabetes
Background
Type II diabetes mellitus has been classified as one of the major illnesses in the world. The primary concern, however, is that the disease is caused by sedentary lifestyle and poor eating habits that can be easily avoided (Widyahening et al. 72). Research has indicated that it is one of the diseases that can be prevented if the right measures are put in place not only in the lifestyle changes of individuals but also community campaigns. Muggeo (1998) focused on the accelerated complications of Type II diabetes mellitus noting that there was a need for increased awareness and early detection methods to prevent some of the associated symptoms. This indicates that healthcare workers should be more involved in enlightening members of the community of the risk factors for Type II diabetes. In a related study, Clarke (2007) recommended that awareness in community settings was an effective method of preventing the increased cases of Type II diabetes. Further, Tang, Pang, Chan, Yeung, & Yeung (2008) studied the relationship between complication awareness and risks of Type II diabetes to reveal that there was a need for community campaigns to inform individuals of the same.
Research Question
In the United States, there has been an alarming increase in the new case of Type II diabetes reported in various health facilities (Buis et al. n.p). Although several measures have been put in place to reduce these cases, there are no significant changes in the reported results. As such, there is a reason to explore other options that may reduce the number of people diagnosed with the illness (Costacou and Mayer-Davis 148). For this research, I will explore the impact of community awareness campaigns in promoting health literacy that will consequently lead to reduce the case of Type II diabetes mellitus. In essence, the following research question will be addressed;
Can increased awareness campaigns in the community reduce cases of Type II diabetes?
Specific Hypothesis
The importance of health literacy in the community has been termed as one of the ways in which various diseases can be prevented (Valerio et al. 160). Type II diabetes campaigns have been mostly based on the national level leading to low impact. This research will aim at identifying the impact of community campaigns at the grass root level on the number of cases reported. The hypothesis will be;
Increased awareness campaigns in the community have a significant effect on reducing cases of Type II diabetes.
