Symptoms Associated with Schizophrenia People who are diagnosed with schizophrenia will usually experience a combination of positive and negative symptoms; symptoms are usually divided into positive and negative categories because of their impact on the diagnosis. ?Positive symptoms are those that appear to reflect an excess or distortion of normal functions? (Schizophrenia.com, 2010). Some positive symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, catatonic behavior, or disorganized speech. According to the DSM, for a person to be diagnosed, they must experience at least one month of two or more positive symptoms. ?Negative symptoms are those that appear to reflect a diminution or loss of normal functions? (Schizophrenia.com, 2010). Negative symptoms may include lack of emotions, low energy, lack of interest in life, low motivation, or social isolation. There are also cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia which may include poor memory or concentration, slow or disorganized thinking, and a difficult understanding, expressing thoughts, and integrating thoughts and feelings. It should be noted that there is not a single symptom that is definitive for diagnosis but rather the diagnosis involves a pattern of symptoms, in connection with social or occupational functioning. Distinction Among Diagnosis As with any health problem, the very first step in getting treatment for schizophrenia is getting a correct diagnosis, and of course, the sooner the better. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to correctly diagnose schizophrenia because its symptoms can be similar to other brain disorders. Above, I previously discussed the symptoms of schizophrenia and the distinction in its diagnosis. When we look at the diagnosis of mood disorders, there is a lot of information to cover as there are different types of mood disorders. In short, mood disorders are a mental health class that is used to broadly describe types of depression and bipolar disorders. Depending on the disorder, a person will experience different symptoms, such as feeling hopeless, ongoing sadness, loss of interest in usual activities, trouble sleeping, irritability, aggression, etc. Mood disorders are diagnosed through medical history and psychiatric evaluation. Schizoaffective disorder is when a person will experience a combination of schizophrenia symptoms (like delusions or hallucinations) and mood disorder symptoms (such as mania or depression). Furthermore, there are two types of schizoaffective disorders which both include symptoms of schizophrenia; the bipolar type includes episodes of depression and mania while the depressive type includes only episodes of major depression (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2016). To diagnose someone with this disorder, that person must experience uninterrupted periods of illness and an episode of major depression, mania, or a mix of both, while also experiencing the symptoms of schizophrenia.
