Peplau described a person as an organism which is developing and trying to minimize anxiety resulting from needs. She also defined environment as a force existing outside the organism and in the cultural setting. Health to her is a symbol of moving forward of personality towards creativity, production, community living, and such. The last component is nursing which plays a significant role in collaboration with other human processes to make health possible in a community (Fernandes & Miranda, 2016).Peplau’s theory focuses on the processes of the interpersonal and therapeutic relationship between the nurse and patient. The application of her theory in nursing is demonstrated in the four phases of nurse-patient relationships which she stated as orientation, identification, explanation, and resolution (Fernandes & Miranda, 2016). During the orientation, the nurse and patient are expected to come together in order to the patient to express the painful feelings and the nurse to determine the kind of help needed by the patient. The second phase is identification, where the patient helps in goal setting to identify how his or her needs can be satisfied. During the third stage, the patient tries to attain a full value of his or her relationship with the nurse. The nurse can also set new goals to promote the relationship. Lastly, if the above three phases are successful, the relationship is terminated gradually to allow the patient survive on her or his own, a phase is known as a resolution. Interpersonal Relations Theory emphasizes the importance of understanding the behavior of the client by the nurse to help solve the difficulties. The nurse should be a teacher who helps the client undergo both formal and informal learning.
