Janelle is the oldest of six children. Her father died of prostate cancer two years ago. She shares a single-family home with her fifty-seven year old mother, three children, and has temporarily custody of her incarcerated sisters two daughters, ages 5 and 6. Four of Janelle’s siblings live close by and are a source of great support to one another. Janelle’s first husband actively co-parents the twins. Her second husband died unexpectedly from a heart attack. Janelle has lived in the same community all of her life and seems to know and like everyone.
Janelle is a teacher’s aide and has worked in the same school district for eleven years. She is well-liked by her colleagues and receives excellent performance evaluations. Janelle is deeply religious and attends Grace Baptist Church twice a week. She teaches Sunday school, is chair of the church’s social outreach committee, and sings in the choir. Janelle has had asthma since childhood and was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes after the birth of her daughter. Shes maintained her medication regimen; however, finances and life demands make it difficult for her to eat as nutritiously as she’d like and to exercise regularly.
Following a series of medical tests due to unremitting lower abdominal pain, Janelle learned that she has pancreatic cancer. Her prognosis is unclear. She has decided to delay treatment focusing instead on prayer. Her pastor and family want Janelle to seek medical treatment. Her oncologist suggested counseling to help with family discussions and decision-making. Janelle does not believe she needs guidance but agreed to consult with a social worker to please her loved ones.
Questions:
Both the individual and family systems social workers would be interested in assessing Janelles current situation and life experiences. Both would discover that she is living at home with her mother, three children and two nieces. They would note that she has a boyfriend, four supportive siblings and a sibling who is incarcerated.
