Select a country outside the U.S. and gather information on the type of income support, healthcare, support for the disabled, long-term care, or other programs that are available for the elderly.

Focus on similarities and dissimilarities between the other country and the United States. As a group

try to make some conclusions about these similarities and differences.

Example number 1
The country of Mexico is quite different from the US when it comes to the elderly. The main difference

is that in the US, we as a culture look to outside resources such as retirement homes and social

security to care and fund our seniors. In Mexico, most elderly live with and are cared for by younger

generations in their families. Rix Paxson states, “The warmth and level of genuine caring is surprising

to many foreigners who are accustomed to perfunctory treatment dispensed within institutional settings”

(Rix Paxson, 2012).
If elderly care was taken more personally in the US, there would not be such panic over

elderly care. It seems that more younger generations are taking a hands off approach to elder care. Not

only would it benefit the elders as they would be cared for by those that love them and they could

worry less as to how they will afford a nursing home, it could also benefit the young as they would

have an opportunity to bond with their elderly family.

The life expectantcy of individuals in Sweden is one of the highest in the world. This means there are

much more people living longer, which will require greater needs to care for them. Some services that

are provided for the elderyly in Sweden include around the clock care and transportation services. When

an elderly person is no longer to care for themselves, they can apply to programs that will assist them

with around the clock care. The cost of this care varies on the financial situation of the person,

however help will be given to those who seek it in Sweden. The elderly and disabled also qualify for

transportation services and adaptive vehicles. In comparison to the U.S., the elderly in Sweden may

begin to receive a pension from the ages of 61-67 and the average person in Sweden retires at age 64.

This is similar to the U.S. as the average adult retires at age 65. In both countries, their has been

an increase in the number of adults working who are age 60 and older due to the inability to care for

themselves as they age.
