Part I: Students will select, read one of the books recommended above in the syllabus, and write a book report on it. A good book report does not spend all of its time just summarizing the content of the book; instead, it will state the main topic(s) of the book, its main arguments and the evidence marshaled to support those arguments. Students may then offer their personal perspectives or opinions about the book’s content and arguments. They may comment, for instance, on whether or not the evidence offered sufficed to prove the points being made, on how the book affected them personally, and so on. Book reports count for up to 20 points of the final grade
Part II: Students will then seek out an experience (or more) of some alternative or complementary healing method that is related to their book’s content, and write about it. For instance, if they read Ingerman’s Medicine for the Earth, they may pick a couple of the exercises or practices elaborated by Ingerman and do them. They will then give accounts of their experiences and how these experiences affected their understanding of healing. Or they may visit a healer or ‘shaman’ to experience a healer. I will post more contact information on the website .Students should consult the instructor in the process of deciding upon their healing method and how to engage it. These reports on healing modalities are 10 points of the final grade.
Report format: Please double-space your reports, give them 1-inch margins, and use a 12 pt. font when posting them. Each report does not need to be any specific number of pages, but I expect that you will need somewhere in the vicinity of 5-10 pages to write the book report, and at least four pages for your report on an alternative healing methodology. Please number the pages of your reports, and take care to check them for spelling and grammatical errors.
Also, all reports must give proper credit to their references. You may use any commonly accepted format for crediting your references, but you must do it.
