In this assignment, you will write a 5-page white paper about a product or topic of your choice. The purpose of a “white paper” is to

help policy makers understand a particular issue and the possible options for addressing it. In the US, the term is now often applied

to papers issued by nongovernmental organizations and research institutes that are designed to educate decision makers and the public

on key policy issues, to help them better understand both the nature of the problem and the range of potential solutions.

Task

Picking a Topic. Start by picking a topic. I’ve given you lots of ideas in the table below. Maybe some issue from your discipline

interests you. Or perhaps one of the readings inspired you. Maybe a project you’ve been working on in another class has inspired you to

want to create a product. You can make up a product (if you have one in mind) and play with the idea of it and how you might “sell” it

to your prospective audience.Email me if you need help figuring out a topic. It’s important to define your topic clearly – and to pick

something you can get at least a little excited about!

Preliminary Research. You’ve probably got some ideas about what you want to write about. Helpful websites include those in the field

that you’re creating for, and other businesses that may have created similar items/concepts. Google and GoogleScholar searches might

also be helpful.

Topic Description. Prepare a paragraph that: 1. Defines the topic you have chosen for the paper (issue or strategy). 2. Gives your

preliminary outline of solutions (for an issue) or implications (for a strategy). 3. Lists three key references you think you will use

in your paper, in good bibliographic form (see below). This will help you organize your paper for the extended writing.

More Research. Do more of the same from Task 2, until you have enough good quality material to produce a paper as outlined in Draft

Paper. This means you need research for each of the sections of your paper – the issue and its solutions, with examples, or the

strategy and its implications, with examples.

Draft Paper. Think about what is it that your audience needs to know. The point is to provide a decision maker with essential

information about the problem and about potential solutions. Use specific examples as much as possible. Be sure to provide citations

for any information that is not common knowledge, using one of the standard citation formats (e.g. author-date or footnotes); showing

the sources of your information gives credibility to your work and tells the reader where to go to find the information.

Final Paper. Your final paper will be developed after peer review and editing.

Note: This paper is NOT an essay. You should provide evidence and analysis rather than opinion. Use your research to build a logical

and insightful discussion that persuades and educates your audience.

Your final paper should be no more than 5 pages, double-spaced. Please number your pages. You must include at least two (2) visuals in

your paper, with proper citation.
