The article More Than a Feeling: The Role of Empathetic Care in Promoting Safety in Health Care (Leana, Meuris, & Lamberton, 2018). This article uses inductive and deductive methods to explore how empathy impacts care-giving jobs (Leana, Meuris, & Lamberton, 2018). The authors debate that empathetic care is evidence by extra-role behavior, emotional engagement and relational richness between paid care-givers and clients (Leana, Meuris, & Lamberton, 2018). A model was developed using qualitative interviews with paid care givers and tested using quantitative case studies in six skilled-nursing facilities (Leana, Meuris, & Lamberton, 2018). Findings did show that empathetic care predicts patient safety, but only under some circumstances.

Case Study Research is often favored by many practitioners as they have become more aware of the importance of taking an holistic and individualized approach to care and case study research seems to be a natural fit  (Gerrish & Lacey, 2013). Case study research explores a phenomenon in its context and assumes that this context is of significance, while it illustrates the issue under investigation (Gerrish & Lacey, 2013). Nurses and other health care practitioners think about practice in terms of ‘cases’ or individual services users, as the medical profession has a long tradition of using cases as a method of exploring practice (Gerrish & Lacey, 2013)

Discuss why you believe the author chose the particular research method.

I believe the authors used the case study research method to address three questions:

What does it mean to do one’s work with empathy?
What differences does individual empathy make in terms of outcomes for those who are care for, specifically with regard to safety concerns?
Are there circumstances that attenuate the relationship between empathetic care and such outcomes?
And by using the case study research method they would obtain samples and be able to examine the research questions using both qualitative and quantitative methods (Leana, Meuris, & Lamberton, 2018).Â

Describe the advantages and weaknesses associated with this approach.
While case study research is unique in the emphases it places on the importance of the context and the impact of the context under investigation and the design, sampling and data collection methods reflect the emphasis on context dependency (Gerrish & Lacey, 2013). The data still needs to be analyzed and articulate the findings in a way that is both respectful and of this context that allows the research to be transferred to other environments (Gerrish & Lacey, 2013)  Â
