Assignment #2: The German Health Care System in a Nutshell (20 points)
This assignment is designed to allow you to assess the basic components of a health care system in
an industrialized nation, specifically Germany. In this assignment, you will prepare a one-page
summary of the German health care system with a focus on the organization and costs of this
health care system. You will use data from the Commonwealth Fund’s International Profiles Of
Health Care Systems found on Blackboard and at
http://international.commonwealthfund.org/countries/germany/ to construct this summary.
For each of the two prompts, write a paragraph that succinctly addresses each of the main
questions:
Prompt 1: Structure and Financing of German Health Care System:
– Who is covered in this system? (Is this system considered a universal care system?)
– What is the role of the government in health care?
– How is the public system financed? What are the main sources of funding for this system?
o What are sickness funds? How are they administered? Can insurers make a profit?
– In general, how do people seek care in this system? Are there gatekeepers? (Do people have to
go to a general practitioner before a specialist?)
Prompt 2: Costs of German Health Care System:
– What is the cost per capita of the German health care system?
– What % of GDP are health care costs?
– How do the costs of the German system compare to other industrialized nations (i.e., US)?
– How does the system control the cost of health care?
Please realize that you could write multiple pages on almost all of these questions. The challenge
with this assignment is to succinctly answer each questions within the one-page limit.
The assignment should be one page in length, single-spaced, with one-inch margins, and at least 11-
point font (10 point is OK for Arial font). The first paragraph should address Prompt 1, and the
second paragraph should address Prompt 2. Keep in mind that you should only quote other sources
when you cannot put a concept into your own words, a situation you will not face in this
assignment. Formatting, grammar, and style account for 3 points of your grade on this assignment.
A hard copy of this assignment is due at the beginning of class on Monday, February 29. No late or
emailed assignments will be accepted. I also do not review assignments prior to the due date via
